Catelyn Dorsey

Psychologist
Catelyn Dorsey - Psychologist
Catelyn Dorsey MSc, MBACP - Real World Therapy

I have worked in the mental health field for over a decade in various charities, private sectors and the NHS. My professional experience has been diverse, working with people from as young as age 11 up to ages 85+ who come from a range of various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

I am currently in the final stage of my Doctor of Counselling Psychology degree which I am due to complete this December 2024. In addition to my doctoral degree, I also hold a Master of Science in Clinical Applications of Psychology and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Originally from the USA, I have the experience of both studying, working, and living in a different country which has given me experiential knowledge of cultural differences that is invaluable in my practice.

How I work:

I provide therapy that combines different theories, modalities, and interventions so that it is tailored to you. This may consist of cognitive behavioural therapy, existential, person-centred, systemic, etc. However, my main approach and the base of which I work from is relational psychodynamic - this means that I will seek depth in your story by exploring your childhood and upbringing. I am also interested in dreams and unconscious processes. Additionally, I pay attention to the therapeutic relationship and what insights arise through how you and I relate to one another in the therapeutic space as a window into how you may relate to others in your personal life.

Challenges I work with:

I have a particular interest in historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, identity, and self-esteem; areas of which I have researched extensively as the focus of my doctoral thesis. I approach therapy from a holistic view and aim to make sense of what your current challenges are based upon elements of your whole life story.

My areas of interest that also align with my professional experience consists of working with:

  • Issues of identity

  • Low self-esteem

  • Racial trauma

  • Intergenerational trauma

  • Childhood abuse (physical, emotional, sexual)

  • Relationship challenges (romantic and familial)

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Trauma
